3 Tips for Incorporating Sympathy Flowers Into a Funeral

In times of loss, flowers can offer heartfelt comfort to family and loved ones. And while the task of selecting the right sympathy lei may feel overwhelming, rest assured that there is no "wrong" choice — gifting lei means to pass on your love. Here are a few key tips to keep in mind.

Stick To What You Know

No one knew the deceased better than you, which probably includes details like what their favorite colors were or if they favored one flower over another. Now is the time to pay tribute to their life by selecting something you know they'd love.

In many cases, the easiest way to do this might be by selecting a particular color. Keeping in mind that orchids only come in a few distinct hues, the next best option is to go for a particular style. Did they like to keep things classy? Maybe an all-white Paradise Triple Orchid Lei would be the best pick. Did they have a love for fragrant flowers? A pīkake, tuberose or ginger lei would tick all those boxes.

Consider How The Flowers Will Be Used

Lei at memorial services in Hawai‘i may be incorporated in a variety of ways that you may want to replicate. If a picture of the deceased will be on display, an open lei like the Double Ti Leaf Maile Style Lei may be draped around it. If it's a burial service, lei may be left on top of the casket or urn, or alongside the site. If it is a burial at sea, loose orchid blooms might be tossed by those in attendance into the water. Lei may even be worn by the deceased's closest family and friends.

Choose The Right Flowers

Certain flowers are requested more than others for memorial services. Fragrant varieties, for example, are popular picks, as are specialty lei like maile — and for good reason, too. There's just something about them that feels extra special.

The downside can be that these flowers are not always in season or readily available. By nature, fragrant flowers are a bit more temperamental, especially when it comes to the natural elements — i.e. weather. Our suggestion: Go with a tried and true like one made with orchid flowers or petals. They can make for both an elegant and colorful addition, depending on what you prefer, and also travel and hold up well.
